7 Million Jigawatts members to perform on board the Diamond Princess.

Popular Detroit Rock and Soul band, 7 Million Jigawatts launches 2011 with a “New Deal” to entertain on board Princess Cruises’ Diamond Princess from March – July of this year.

7 Million Jigawatts (7MJ) has recently been making quite a name for themselves by performing across Michigan and the Midwest at festivals and events like the True North Radio Network’s Summer Concert Series and the Taste of Clarkston. The band is hot off the heels of their first original cd release, ‘Taking Flight’ which is available online at ITunes and CD Baby. Their unique style of music infused with rock and soul caught the attention of Ford Motor Company in 2009. Their song “I’ve Got You Covered,” was featured in the 2010 Mustang online advertising campaign.

To land the gig with Princess Cruises, Jake Tobias (bass), and Melissa Behring (vocals) joined forces with Scott Michaels (drums), Sean Z (guitar), and Scott Vernier (keys). They incorporated more dance party favorites in order to cover all the repertoire required by Princess Cruises. They added over a hundred new songs and now boast an even broader base of covers spanning from the 50‘s/60‘s Sock Hop Era, to 70’s Disco and even more Classic Rock from the 80’s, 90’s and today. The band will spend four months on board the Diamond Princess. The first two in Asia and then crossing the Bering Straits to spend the last two chasing the glaciers in Alaska and dancing through decades of musical fun.

They plan on spending their spare time on board the Diamond Princess writing and recording the next 7MJ album and hope to have it ready for a release later this year. “I am so excited to have the opportunity to travel, see the world and perform on board such a popular and respected cruise ship.” said front woman, Melissa Behring. “This is an opportunity of a lifetime and one we could not pass up.”

7 Million Jigawatts is currently booking festivals and events for their return to the States in late July. This is their first tour outside the USA March 2011-July 2011 and only have a few performances left.

7 Million Jigawatts Frontwoman Patch.com Interview

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Melissa Behring, 7 Million Jigawatts frontwoman and her company, Dreamtownmedia.com were recently featured on the RoyalOak.Patch.com web site. Patch.com is a new way to find out about, and participate in, what’s going on near you. During their interview last December, Natalie Sugarman questioned Melissa about the goals for her arts & entertainment company, 7 Million Jigawatts and the 2009 7MJ release, “Taking Flight”.

“Patch: Who or what inspired you to become a musician?
Behring: It’s always been in me. My mom started me singing when I was really young. I just always had opportunities to perform so I never stopped. It wasn’t really one thing or person. I was 4, my mom said sing and I did.”

You can read the full article online at royaloak.patch.com.

You can hear 7 Million Jigawatts this Friday, January 28 at 10pm at Rogers Roost 33626 Schoenherr Rd Sterling Heights MI.

Buy a copy of “Taking Flight” on iTunes.

It’s only a few hours before the inevitable anti-climax of another year ending and another one sputtering to life like a frozen car battery, so this column (which you have our permission to peruse after a full recovery from New Year’s Eve debauchery) will be filled with certain observations about the present and future art scene in our metropolis and environs ….

We Are, Could Be, Might Be …
… The Hollywood of the Midwest. That’s right. If one thing and one thing only has us truly excited these days, it’s the simple fact that (literally overnight) filmmakers have fallen in love with the celluloid possibilities of this city. And why not? You want post-apocalyptic ruins? Here. Elegant buildings whispering beauty and wealth? Here. The best and most well-preserved cars outside of Havana? Here. An art critic who wouldn’t say no to a walk-on or a cameo in … anyway, it’s here and then some. Something else that’s “here” is the forthcoming Detroit Independent Film Festival, an expansive and ambitious project in March that will reveal in no uncertain terms how much energy is on tap behind these scenes. Did we also happen to mention that an awful lot of overdue “urban renewal” takes place when a film crew needs to blow up something? More: detroitindiefest.com.

Those Worth a Listen:

Many an art event in this town has been enlivened, enhanced and rescued from the soporific effluvia of pontificating art critics (no names) by musical ensembles who have lent a welcome pinch of energy to the proceedings. We want to name two — and we also want to see these bands get more attention in the next 365 days. Gino Fanelli’s Red Hot Sugar Daddies provide sweet music and old school oomph every time.Providing an equal amount of gusto (albeit in a different vein — or voltage?) is 7 Million Jigawatts
. For all you’ve done in 2009 — thanks!
