Won’t You Let Me Take You On A Sea Cruise

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

7 Million Jigawatts members reassigned to perform on board the Coral Princess.

Popular Detroit Rock and Soul band, 7 Million Jigawatts launches 2011 with a “New Deal” to entertain on board Princess Cruises’ Coral Princess from April – July of this year.

7 Million Jigawatts (7MJ) has recently been making quite a name for themselves by performing across Michigan and the Midwest at festivals and events like the True North Radio Network’s Summer Concert Series and the Taste of Clarkston. The band is hot off the heels of their first original cd release, ‘Taking Flight’ which is available online at ITunes and CD Baby. Their unique style of music infused with rock and soul caught the attention of Ford Motor Company in 2009. Their song “I’ve Got You Covered,” was featured in the 2010 Mustang online advertising campaign.

To land the gig with Princess Cruises, Jake Tobias (bass), and Melissa Behring (vocals) joined forces with Scott Michaels (drums), Sean Z (guitar), and Scott Vernier (keys). They incorporated more dance party favorites in order to cover all the repertoire required by Princess Cruises. They added over a hundred new songs and now boast an even broader base of covers spanning from the 50‘s/60‘s Sock Hop Era, to 70’s Disco and even more Classic Rock from the 80’s, 90’s and today. The band will spend four months on board the Diamond Princess. The first month and a half in the Panama Canal, Carribbean, and the Mexican Riviera and then up the West coast of the USA by San Francisco, Vancouver and chasing the glaciers in Alaska and dancing through decades of musical fun.

They plan on spending their spare time on board the Coral Princess writing and recording the next 7MJ album and hope to have it ready for a release later this year. “I am so excited to have the opportunity to travel, see the world and perform on board such a popular and respected cruise ship.” said front woman, Melissa Behring. “This is an opportunity of a lifetime and one we could not pass up.”

7 Million Jigawatts is currently booking festivals and events for their return to the States around the 4th of July. This is their first tour outside the USA March 2011-July 2011 and only have a few performances left.

Got Gus Jam?

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

Our friend, Natalie Sugarman, quoted 7 Million Jigawatt’s Melissa Behring recently in great article for the Royal Oak Patch on the monthly first Sunday Gusoline Alley Open Mic Jam hosted by our good friends Gino Fanelli and Niko Pittman. Many of our favorite musicians from around Metro Detroit mark their calendars each month to come out a jam.

“A number of local musicians come out on the first Sunday of the month. Musicians who have performed here in the past include Emily Rose, Jake Tobias and Melissa Behring of 7 Million Jigawatts, Bernie Staples of the Rickety Nelsons, the Motor City Sidestrokers, the Milroys and Rudy Varner, who is an upright bassist.

Renowned musician Jack Scott has also played open mic night. He’s best-known for hits through the years such as “The Way I Walk,” “What in the World’s Come Over You” and “Burning Bridges.”

Behring, lead singer of 7 Million Jigawatts and an avid open mic night performer, loves open mic night.

“I really look forward to it. Gino and Niko are great hosts,” she said. “It’s a rare opportunity to have a few laughs with my friends and sing a bunch of old songs that make me happy. I’m always meeting new musicians there. It’s a really encouraging environment.”

On top of being a musical evening, other performances and art have been welcomed during open mic nights.”

To read the full article, check out the Royal Oak Patch.

Sunday, March 6 at 5pm, Jake Tobias and Melissa Behring plan to hit the Gus Jam one last time before they embark on their Asian Tour later this month. So, if you’re looking to see them before they split, stop by Gusoline Alley.

    Monday, November 8th, 2010

On Friday, November 5, 7 Million Jigawatts traveled to Kalamazoo, MI to showcase at the annual Michigan Festivals and Events Association “Party at MI Place” Convention. The Michigan Festivals & Events Association helps to promote hundreds of community festivals and events across our state. The MFEA’s annual convention features outstanding workshops, networking opportunities, a trade show, silent auction and also showcases a wide variety of entertainers. 7 Million Jigawatts kicked off the the 2010 Friday night showcase performing alongside a line up of acts like Justine Blazer, Duffy King Koalition, Monkey Grinder and Alan Turner.

Melissa Behring and Jake Tobias joined forces with Scott Michaels and Sean Z to create a powerful new 7 Million Jigawatts line up featuring four experienced entertainers and amazing singers. The MFEA showcase was their first public performance and the band was on fire right out of the gate. Performing in front of around 440 of Michigan’s festival planners and event volunteers, the band warmed the audience up with hits like “Chain of Fools” and “Crazy”. They rocked an exciting rendition of “This Must Be Love”, a 7MJ original song from the 2009 release, “Taking Flight”. They wrapped up the night with a smooth blend of vocal harmonies on “Suspicious Minds” and closing their set out with the romantic ballad “Need You Now”.

We would also like to announce the departure of Nathan Montgomery from our ranks starting on January 1st. Nate plans to start 2011 off by focusing on his original acoustic guitar music and his first love jazz guitar. Nathan started playing guitar, bass and keys for 7MJ in 2007 and we have been grateful for his talents along the way. We wish him great success in his upcoming musical pursuits.
