True North Radio Network’s 2015 Summer Concert Series
Featuring 7 Million Jigawatts
Live at the Bay View Park Amphitheater in Alpena
Saturday June 27 6PM

Alpena, MI – True North Radio Network announces their 2015 summer concert series featuring a performance by Detroit’s own, 7 Million Jigawatts. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Alpena Native, Melissa Behring sing her heart out in her home town after touring the Seven Seas for the last four years on board Princess Cruises vessels. Her band, 7 Million Jigawatts (7MJ) returns to land with a mature, robust, harmoniously-rich musical offering. The experience 7MJ has gained traveling the world performing has been undeniably enlightening and life changing. The vast diverse audience the band performs for on board cruise ships has helped to craft their style as musicians and artists into a broader globally appealing musically group.

The 7MJ original song “I’ve Got You Covered,” was featured in the 2010 Mustang online advertising campaign. Since then, 7MJ has shed their alternative attitude in exchange for a sound rooted in deeply classic rock and blues. Focusing on rich four part vocal harmonies in styles like the Eagles, Linda Rondstadt and Queen, their approach to classic rock, rhythm and blues and popular music has become a favorite of people around the globe.

The four of the five musicians featured in 7 Million Jigawatts are favorite performers in a popular cruise ship band playing shows on board Princess Cruises.

From Alpena, Michigan, Melissa Behring is featured front and center on Lead Vocals. Melissa studied voice at Central Michigan University and has been performing internationally with groups like the New Deal Band, Sponge, and her award winning jazz combo, the Melissa Behring Project.

Accompanying Melissa in 7MJ on Guitar and Vocals, is her husband, Jake Tobias, from Royal Oak, Michigan. Jake’s talent on the guitar is a force to be reckoned with. The last four years at sea has helped hone his licks into a tasty set of classic rock and blues any fan of Eric Clapton would enjoy. Jake has been heard playing guitar and bass with the New Deal Band, The Drifters, The Contours, Leslie Gore and Diamond Dave Sommerville.

From Mount Clemens, Michigan on Keyboards and Vocals, Scott David Vernier has been turning with Melissa and Jake for the past four years. On board the cruise ship as well as on land, Scott brings a multi-layered rich orchestral sound to the group with his double stack of keyboards and synthesizers. Scott has played keys with the likes of the New Deal Band, The George Brothers and Gretchen Wilson.

Traveling 19 hours from Bathurst, New Brunswick Canada and the Bass player and Vocalist in their cruise ship group is Alain Boudreau. Al has a grounded bass groove that encourages feet tapping and bodies moving. Al has performed with many international groups from the New Deal Band, Sean Ashby (Sarah McLaughlin) and The Don Walker Band.

Rounding out the rhythm section is 7MJ veteran, Clint Sabon on Drums. As he drummed for the group in it’s infancy, fans may remember Clint from the early days of 7 Million Jigawatts. Since 7MJ’s inception in 2003, h’s been back in the saddle with the group on and off. His talent and prowess on the drums cannot be matched. He has been seen performing with the likes of Saoco, Nathan Montgomery and Nine the Chicago Tribute.

New Deal on Royal Princess

January 13th, 2015
New Deal Band

New Deal Band

As many of you are aware, Jake Tobias & Melissa Behring joined up with Scott Vernier (keys), Al Boudreau (bass) and Neil Jones (drums) to form a group for the cruise lines called New Deal. For the past four years, we have been performing on board various vessels around the globe for Princess Cruises. The New Deal band format is very broad. We perform covers from a wide variety of artists and eras from the 50’s to today, classic rock, country, rhythm & blues and even some disco. I’ve heard people compare us with a wedding band. Guess that can’t be all that bad… With such a diverse audience coming on the ships, it takes an all encompassing musical offering to make a difference in anyones experience on such large vessels.

This has been an exciting change from our previous land based work with 7 Million Jigawatts. We have been fortunate to travel together and see the world. If you’re interested in checking out some of the places we’ve visited, Jake & Melissa run a travel blog at www.permanentworkation.com

Real Detroit Weekly

August 10th, 2013

Thanks to our friend, Robert Del Valle and the fine editors at Real Detroit Weekly for giving 7 Million Jigawatts a nod in this weeks Stage & Canvas section.

“Before They Sail …

Several years ago, this column started an annual tradition of sorts by singling out a local band or entertainer for some well-deserved and belated attention. Readers of Stage & Canvas will probably recall that 7 Million Jigawatts was one of the first combos to be accorded this honor – and there have been quite a few polite requests since then for an update. Well, here it is. Melissa Behring and Jake Tobias are two Royal Oak musicians still going strong playing guitar and singing covers and original works. “We are actually putting our heads together and working on a new album,” Behring announced recently, “and it looks as if we’re going to be setting sail again in a few weeks. The Princess Cruise Line evidently wants us back after performing on their ships for forty-four weeks in 2012, so we’ll soon be on board the Emerald Princess for five months. At sea, we’re a different band called The New Deal with a different line up of veteran musicians. We’re lucky to have Scott Vernier from Mt. Clemens on keyboards and vocals and we have Clint Sabon on drums and Joey Vegas on bass. Clint has been seen most recently playing in popular country artist David Shelby’s band and Joey has a band called Downtown Vegas. However, I’m very happy to say that 7 Million Jigawatts will be ashore and downriver on 8/10 at Buster’s Place in Trenton. We consider it a good luck charm when our fans see us before we hit the ocean waves, so please spread the word!” Consider the word duly promulgated. Oh, and set your compass, dear reader, for 5784 W. Jefferson.”

Hot August Nights

July 22nd, 2013

On August 3, the Guiness Book of World Recods descends on Northern Michigan. That’s right folks, if you drive a Mini Cooper and can make it up to the Mackinac Bridge, the connecting point for the 5 miles between the Lower and Upper Penninsula’s where Lake Huron and Michigan meet, you too can become a part of the largest parade of Mini’s ever assembled.

The Mackinac Bridge "Mighty Mac"

“New world record attempt Aug. 3 at Mackinac Bridge

June 11, 2013 — The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) will join MINI of Grand Rapids and owners of Mini Cooper automobiles from all over the country as they rally and attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest parade of MINIs. The MINI rally will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, and will culminate with a mass crossing of the Mackinac Bridge, the world’s third-longest suspension bridge.
“We gladly support this attempt at a new world record highlighting Michigan’s iconic Mackinac Bridge,” said MBA Administrator Bob Sweeney. “We will do whatever we can to make their crossing safe, secure, and memorable – as they attempt to break the Guinness World Record.”

The current world record for the most Mini Coopers in a parade is 1,450. The MBA and event planners encourage all MINI owners to use social media and other methods to spread the word. More information is available online on the MINI of Grand Rapids Facebook page: www.facebook.com/events/521093454613906/.

It just so happens that 7 Million Jigawatt’s own, Melissa Behring and Jake Tobias own a Mini Cooper. Little Lolita is going to have a chance to help break a Guiness World Record for the Largest Parade of MINI Cars at MINI on the Mack. It’s acutally a record for the most Mini’s on a suspension bridge, but who needs to get technical.

Last minute blessings rock! Just got a call to play the Ironwood Grill in Plymouth, MI tonight. We start at 10:30. This is an acoustic performance featuring Melissa Behring on vocals, Jake Tobias on guitar and vocals and Scott David Vernier on keys and vocals. This trio has been rocking it out on Princess Cruises ships with a 5 piece band for the past couple years. Collectively they have a pretty amazing and wide repertoire. Expect to hear some new songs by bands like Bruno Mars, FUN., P!NK, along side favorites by Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Rick Springfield, and Journey.

The Ironwood Grill has a fun sporty environment with great big windows right near the art in the park festivities, so stop on in when the vendors outside close down. Happy Friday everyone!

Love the Hometown Crowd

July 9th, 2013

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported our performances last week at Silky’s in Dearborn, the Royal Oak Brewery in Royal Oak and Independence Day Festival in Clarkston. Each one of these performances had a special reunion with some of  our Detroit area friends. Being gone so much last year, we really didn’t have enough time to see everyone. This string of July holiday shows really provided a great opportunity to have fun, play some music and socialize. What more are holidays for?

We have one more performance in Michigan on August 10 before Jake, Scott and I head back out to the seas on the Emerald Princess.
